ST. LEONARD, MD — The future of emergency services in Calvert County is in capable hands, thanks to the dedicated young men and women participating in the Probationary and Cadet Workshops at the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company 7. The program is spearheaded by Deputy Fire Chief Jimmy Schooley.

Ranging in age from 13 to 27, these volunteers are the heart of a growing initiative designed to educate, train, and inspire the next generation of Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians. Through hands-on training and guided mentorship, participants are learning what it means to serve with skill, integrity, and compassion.

“These workshops provide more than just technical training,” said President Kinsey Weems “They instill teamwork, responsibility, and a sense of pride that comes from giving back to your community. These young volunteers are proof that there’s nothing stronger, than the heart of a volunteer.”

The program combines structured classroom instruction with real-world applications, from learning fire suppression and rescue operations to mastering the fundamentals of emergency medical response. Each session is led by experienced mentors who volunteer their time to guide and develop the department’s rising stars.

Now approaching its fourth decade of service, Company 7 continues to grow not just in size, but in spirit by investing in youth development to ensure the community’s safety and resilience for generations to come.

“These Cadets and Probationary Members represent the future of volunteerism,” said Asst. Chief Vanessa DeVries. “Their enthusiasm and commitment reflect exactly what this department was founded on, service above self.”

Community members are encouraged to learn more about joining the SLVFD Cadet or Probationary programs or supporting the department’s youth initiatives by visiting our website at www.SLVFD.org This program is only possible through donors like you!! Thank you!!
