On Thursday, October 29th, 2020 at approximately 0314 hours, St. Leonard units were dispatched first due to the 7300 block of Sawmill Road in Lusby for the house fire. Engine 72 (D/C Eckels), Squad 7 (C. Irons), Tanker 7 (S/O Baker), Utility 7 (Lt. Davis), Ambulance 7 (H. McClanahan), Rehab 7 (EMS Lt. Eckstein) all responded. En-Route units were updated of a corrected address and reports of a person trapped. Engine 72 arrived on scene laying a supply line from the entrance of the driveway and found a two-story single-family home with fire showing from the Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie sides. The occupants of the home stated that one person was unaccounted for, and the crew from 72 made an aggressive interior attack with a 1 ½” 200’ attack line. The engine officer forced entry to the front door and the crew was met with a very well involved fire to encompass the entire first floor, and extremely high heat conditions. The Engine crew was able to successfully extinguish all fire on the first floor before being evacuated to regroup, due to a collapse of the second floor in the bravo quadrant of the house. The fire was deemed under control at the 45-minute mark, with all crews from Calvert, St. Mary’s, and Charles Counties working in unison to mitigate the incident. Crews from St. Leonard and Prince Frederick remained on the scene for 3 hours assisting the Maryland State Fire Marshalls Office and doing overhaul. Ultimately the “trapped” occupant of the home was not trapped, and soon accounted for. Multiple Occupants were transported to burn centers for injuries sustained.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental from the kitchen area.
