Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1952 by a group of volunteers on the northwest shore of Sand Lake. Through the years they purchased fire fighting and rescue equipment through association dues, fund raising, and help from the township residents. In 1987 Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Department began providing service to all of Franklin Township after building a second fire station on Tipton Highway in the village of Tipton. This was accomplished with the support of our township residents through a modest fire millage. Today we operate two fire stations, seven fire apparatus and two hundred plus calls per year and our fire and rescue personnel are still volunteering with no compensation. Each firefighter goes through over four hundred hours of training before they can serve as firefighters. All of our equipment, including the fire trucks, has been purchased through fund raising. |
