By Safety Officer Norman Bauer
September 23, 2015

Dalton Newsome, an 11-year-old from Lusby, participated in the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department's 2015 Junior Fire Camp this past summer. During the 5-day camp, Dalton obtained CPR training and his CPR certification. That training came in handy last week when Dalton observed an infant choking on an apple at a friend's house.

According to SoMdNews.com, "Dalton immediately sprang into action. He turned the baby around, put the baby’s face in his hand and his belly on his arm, and placed the bottom of my palm so as to strike the baby twice swiftly between the shoulder blades. The infant coughed up the apple and instantly started crying and breathing."

The officers and membership of St. Leonard Volunteer Fire and Rescue are extremely proud of Dalton.
